What We Do

Process.

The Bristol Investment Fund consists of eight different teams, all covering a specific sector of the broader equities market. Teams consist of 3-5 analysts led by an experienced portfolio manager. Each team generates ideas and conducts research to determine what they believe are the most attractive opportunities within their sector.

Portfolio managers are responsible for portfolio construction, making the final decision on all ideas presented by the team. Portfolio managers are there to guide analysts in their research, providing leadership and direction to each team.

The fund’s chief investment officer is responsible for asset allocation between the different teams. This is done in consultation with portfolio managers, and with consideration of market conditions and the opportunity set available in each sector.

Emails are sent out every Monday from the Co-Presidents to highlight events an exciting market developments and news. On Tuesday, there is the weekly meeting where teams come together to present ideas, discuss positions. At the start of term, we will be hosting our Investment Bootcamp which will provide basic training in valuation methods etc. Our Market Musings podcast is recorded and held via Zoom every Wednesday at midday.

Philosophy.

The Bristol Investment Fund represents a variety of investment philosophies. Each portfolio manager operates with a high degree of autonomy, allowing them to pursue their investment strategy as they see fit. Consequently, the fund has portfolio managers pursing a diverse selection of strategies, allowing for nimbleness in the face of changing market conditions.

The fund acts as a long/short hedge fund focusing solely on equities. Due to constraints imposed by the duration of the academic year, the fund’s investment timeframe is limited to 6-9 months. Consequently, portfolio managers seek to be fully invested at all times and prefer positions with a near-term catalyst.

The fund provides a strong stepping stone for aspiring financiers. Last year, we won the UK Finance League allowing the Fund to gain exposure to bulge bracket banks and professionals from the industry.

The Fund has a proven track record of helping members join high profile companies within investment banking, asset management and the broader financial industry.

Alumni of the fund go on to further exhibit their skills in firms such as HSBC, Morgan Stanley, Citi, BofA, Berenberg and many more.

The fund also provides a good foundation of knowledge for members that aim to break into investment banking with certain alumni now working as analysts in top firms including Barclays and J.P Morgan.

Through regular meetings and a well structured financial model, members highly benefit from eloquent communication and networking which allows unique qualitative and quantitative sources of information to be shared amongst and learned from.
